The Old Tree: The World’s Eldest Tree<\/p>\n
Among our farming community, there is a deep-rooted belief that the Muttuga tree is the oldest among all trees and vegetation in the world. For this reason, it is also called the ‘Mudukada Mara’ (The Old Man Tree) in rural areas. Just as experienced elders can forecast the ups and downs of life, this tree heralds the rainfall forecast of the year through its natural cycles.<\/p>\n

Calculating Rainfall through Flowers and Pods<\/p>\n
The flower of the Muttuga tree is known in English as the ‘Flame of the Forest’. Its botanical name is Butea monosperma, and another English name is the ‘Butea gum tree’. These flowers bloom in vibrant orange and red colours, making the forest look as if it is on fire, which is how it earned its name.<\/p>\n
When the months of February and March arrive, the Muttuga tree sheds all its leaves and adorns itself with beautiful red flowers. Just as the monsoon is about to begin, the red flowers and the subsequent pods (Kayi) dropped by the tree signal the fluctuations of that year’s rainfall to the farmers.<\/p>\n
According to folklore, if the Muttuga tree blooms abundantly, sets fruit well, and those pods hang loosely swaying from the tree, it means that both the early monsoon (Mungaru) and late monsoon (Hingaru) rains will be extremely bountiful that year.<\/p>\n
Seed Position and Rainfall Forecast<\/p>\n
Farmers precisely calculate the distribution of rainfall based on where the coin-shaped seed inside the Muttuga pod is located.<\/p>\n
If it is near the stalk (Excellent late monsoon): If the seed is closer to the stalk (Thottu) of the pod, it is believed that the late monsoon (Hingaru) rainfall will be excellent that year.<\/p>\n
If it is near the tip (Excellent early monsoon): If the seed is located near the tip (Thudu) of the pod, it is the firm belief of farmers that the early monsoon (Mungaru) rain will arrive on time and be highly abundant.<\/p>\n
If it is in the middle (Both monsoons will be good): If the seed is exactly in the middle of the pod, folk wisdom calculates that both the early and late monsoons will be evenly distributed and plentiful.<\/p>\n
Even though science and technology have advanced immensely, this indigenous knowledge of rural folks, who live by understanding the subtle signs of nature, remains fascinating to this day. Every cycle of the Muttuga tree reflects the inseparable relationship between nature and humans.
